3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet - SL Auto Dark Lens 05-0013-41

The 3M™ Speedglas™ SL Welding Helmet is the lightest Speedglas hood ever. The SL weighs at least 25% less than any other Speedglas helmet. The SL helmet features a headband with a 4-position, back-and-forth adjustment, which allows for a more custom fit. A one-handed, easy squeeze adjustor in back and a uniquely engineered, flexible structure help the headband conform to best fit your head.

Less Weight, Same Speedglas Quality

The SL (Super Light) still provides legendary Speedglas optical performance, with an auto-darkening filter featuring a light state shade of 3 and a dark shade range of 8-12 for use with all arc welding processes. Plus, the ADF incorporates a patented auto on/off motion sensing technology that turns on the arc detection circuit the instant it is handled. In addition, the ADF batteries are replaceable, unlike many competitive ADFs which must be discarded when their batteries are depleted. This Speedglas™ SL Welding Helmet is the helmet welders have been demanding.

Features
  • Speedglas™ auto-darkening filter features a light state shade of 3 and a dark shade range of 8-12.
  • State-of-the-art liquid crystal design reduces overall weight, which may help alleviate neck strain and fatigue.
  • Superior optics allow you to clearly see the weld puddle for precise weld quality.
  • Patented Auto On/Off technology helps eliminate accidental flash and extends battery life.
  • Fast-adjusting, flexible, multi-position headband provides greater comfort and fit for a variety of head sizes and shapes.
  • 4 sensitivity levels allow adjustment to varying welding processes and ambient light conditions.
  • Replaceable batteries help extend the life of the helmet.
  • NEW Headgear Design! - 2-size front portion of suspension fits more head sizes and face shapes.
    4-position, back/forth slide adjustment.
Adjustment in rear, for easy one-hand tightening and push-button release.

    1 Answer
The 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet - SL Auto Dark Lens 05-0013-41 has the same optical quality as the Speedglas 9100 series helmets. it does not have the same optical quality as the 9100XXi helmets.. The SL does not have a grind mode. You can however set the lens on shade 3 which would approximate the grind mode.

How does this helmet handle against fogging
    1 Answer
The 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet - SL Auto Dark Lens 05-0013-41 does not use the same helmet design as the Speedglas 9100 series helmets .Because of this it does not have the internal exhaust vents which reduce the likelihood of fogging. Lightest auto shield, worth every penny
I've been welding almost 20 years now and I can honestly say that this hood has been the best, easiest, and by far the lightest I've ever used. Only negatives I have is that is doesn't have a grind mode and the outer protection lens replacements (anti-fog & anti-scratch coated) are a little pricey! But, once you use this good, you will pay 100$ per lens because it IS THAT GREAT of a hood
ProsLight weight! Clear view Doesn't fog up when your sweating like crazy Auto darkening snaps on even when tig welding quickly with zero lag Scratch resistant outer lenses seem to last pretty long Head gear is very comfortable Auto lens shuts itself off when not in use or in your bag. Turns itself back on when it is pulled out of your bag and ready to light up. Saves the battery so you don't burn through them
ConsNo grind mode Outer protection lenses are a little expensive.

Light yes, pro welding durable, iffy.
We go through 10 - 12 of these a year performing structural steel field welding. All in all a great hood for SMAW and FCAW.

Primary cause of death is sweat entering the battery compartment and migrating to the PC board and short circuiting it.

Close second is cracking the ADF lens from the inside due to removing the inner lens cover plate to prevent fogging. Yes, it should stay in, but can't see, can't weld.
ProsAll day long light Good optics
ConsSusceptible to failure when exposed to sweat Inner cover plate does not seat well enough to prevent normal respiration from forming a fog between the inner cover plate and the ADF.

    Great helmet
Just started using it in welding school and it's working out great! Had to get used to adjusting it, but since I'm new to welding, that's to be expected. Protects my eyes great and I can see what I'm doing. I know all the instructors love Speedglas helmets, they're the ones who recommended it to me.

    Speedglas SL
This is a great hood overall, and the light weight was my primary factor in buying it - nothing else I can find comes close in weight. It is great to wear and quite unobtrusive and unnoticeable on my head simply because of the weight.
The drawbacks - the lift/drop stop adjustment seems cheap, because it is plastic and was more difficult than it should have been to re-adjust after I had loosened the hinge too much and had to reassemble it. There are some compromises made to make this hood super light.
The head strap adjuster does not work very well, both the back ratchet and the crown depth. I want to like it, but so far, no dice. Two of my coworkers who bought this hood replaced the headgear with another brand within a couple weeks because they were so annoyed with the original.
Also, the sensors seem to work very well, and I really appreciate the auto-on feature - as soon as you pick up the hood, it turns out by detecting movement.
Can't speak to longevity overall yet, nor battery life, but I am satisfied nonetheless.
BTW I could not match or even come close to Cyberweld's price, anywhere online nor in local shops.
ProsSuper duper light weight; Auto-on; Fast A/D response; Low-profile shape for getting in tight spaces; Looks like a space helmet (may be a Con for some folks...my girlfriend thinks it's cool, ha!).
ConsHead gear seems to have been so focused on weight that it functions less well than a hood of this price should. Expensive as heck.
