3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet - 9100X Auto Dark Lens 06-0100-20SW

The Speedglas™ 9100 welding helmet with 9100X auto-darkening lens is the most advanced, solar battery assist auto-darkening lens in the Speedgas welding helmet line. The comfort of the Speedglas™ 9100 welding helmet is the result of extensive research and development processes. 3M™ consulted with international experts in ergonomics and anatomy to ensure that the 9100 is the most comfortable and protective Speedglas™ welding helmet ever.

The 9100X lens offers a large 8.82 square inch viewing area PLUS these great features: A grinding shade 3. Gas welding shade 5. Micro-plasma welding shade 8. Arc welding shades 9 through 13. Sensitivity settings for normal welding to low-amp inverter TIG welding, and even low sensitivity setting for when other welders are working nearby.

Speedglas™ 9100 Helmet Features
  • The helmet is made from a lightweight, but durable material that meets the mechanical strength requirements of ANSI Z87.1-2003.
  • Heat reflecting silver front.
  • Increased coverage for lower neck from heat and welding sparks.
  • Increased coverage for ear and side of neck.
  • SideWindows: Exclusive, patented shade 5 filters that widen your field of vision. SideWindows enable you to be more aware of nearby moving machinery, tools and other peripheral hazards. Welders can also use removable cover plates for when peripheral vision would be distracting.

Speedglas™ 9100X Auto Dark Lens Features
  • Viewing area 8.82 sq in.
  • Solar panel to extend battery life
  • Magnification made easy. The new magnifying lens holder, on the inside face of the welding helmet, makes lens installation easier and more adjustable.
  • Seven user selectable dark shades: shade 5 for gas welding/cutting, shade 8 for microplasma and low amp TIG welding and shade 9 to 13 for most other types of arc welding.
  • The tack welding comfort mode uses an intermediate light state (shade 5). If a follow-up arc is not struck within two seconds, the welding filter switches to the normal light state (shade 3). The comfort mode may help reduce eye fatigue resulting from the eye constantly needing to adjust to differing light levels during tack welding.
  • The delay function allows the user to set the dark-to-light switching time.
  • Sensitivity of arc detection can be adjusted to provide reliable switching for a wide range of arc welding processes, amperages and situations. And you now can lock-in any shade: the light shade for grinding or other non-welding activities, or one of the dark shades to have it function as a passive welding filter.

How clear isnthisbhood compared to the Jackson true sight 2, Miller hoods, and the new XXI model. Obviously it's not the XXI but is there that much of a difference between this hood and competitors? And why don't they recommend using these for overhead welding?
    1 Answer
The 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet - 9100X Auto Dark Lens 06-0100-20SW is a very good helmet however the optics used in the 9100x are not quite as clear as you would find in a SpeedglasXXi or a Jackson Trusight 2. The 9100x would be equal to the top of the line Miller helmets. None of these helmets are recommended for overhead welding because they are molded from plastic and the front lenses are plastic. If a hot glob of weld from overhead welding were to fall onto the helmet it would melt through.. Helmets made from fiberglass are generally the choice for overhead welding

To set the 3M Speedglas Welding Helmet - 9100X Auto Dark Lens 06-0100-20SW to the grind mode you adjust the sensitivity so that the led light is positioned under the light green colored block (light state lock). This will lock the lens in a shade 3 mode for grinding use. After taking a welding class as a makerspace, I decided to take the plunge and picked up a cheap tig machine. I wanted the best safety gear so after some research I decided on the 3M speedglas. Compared to the HF hood I used in the class this thing is amazing

    Very nice shield.
Welded for years with a Speedglas utility. And while the headgear does seem very flimsy and prone to breakage this 9000x is very very nice. It does catch yellow and red strobes from pretty far away it's workable.

Had and still have a 9002X and been hearing about the 9100 series having the tack mode (shade specified, tack, shade 5, shade 3) so ended up purchasing the 9100X. Seems to be as good as Speedglas gets which is great! Fast shipping and came with everything Cyberweld said it came with. Overall very pleased.

I forked up the money to purchase the 9100X for my friend because he is getting married. It's his gift from me, but I'm almost tempted to just keep it for myself because I love it. I def. wish I had something like this when I was welding. I love the visibility and the look of it. I'm jealous. Makes me think I should get married so I can buy myself one..... haha just kidding.

    3M Speedglas
I bought the original version of the Speedglas, the model 9000X, about 15 years ago. During that time I've been pleased with the product and, other than batteries, I have had no problems. But the helmet was showing its age and the lens of that original 9000X was getting dark areas, so I started checking out newer AD helmets.

The best modern AD helmet I could find was the new Speedglas model 9100X. Actually, if you don't use magnifying lenses, maybe one of the larger viewing window models would be the absolute best, I wanted the standard 2x4 window.

The newer suspension or headgear on the new 9100X is more comfortable and easy to adjust. The lens is very clear and bright, and easy to adjust.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this helmet.
ProsThere is a frame installed inside to accept the standard 2x4 "cheater" lens. This is an improvement over sandwiching it behind the plastic cover plates.
ConsHardhat mounting is going to be more difficult. The standard plastic bolts that I used to mount my older 9000X model to the hardhat lugs won't fit this helmet. Instead, I need to buy a dedicated hardhat mounting kit.

Used HF auto-darkening and a hobart passive lense for the last 8 years. I weld approx. 2 hrs./ wk. maintenance / construction / teaching. Love this helmet. Would've loved the XX model but really stretched to get this one. Now I want to get more time to weld. I love the clarity, it does help you to be a better welder.

not that impressed after day 1
Used this hood for only an hour today and well...its really not that great. The headgear sucks so far complete PIA to get used to and it actually gave me a headache after only an hour. Th clarity is phenominal though. But theres hoods out there are other hoods out there with the same optical quality for half the price. Just me 2 cents. To be fair ive oy used it once for an hour so ill use it a while longer and post another reply

Great investment if you weld for a living.
Been welding for 40 years now and have always used a Fibre metal standard helmet. Finally decided to try an auto darkening helmet and after much internet research went for the 3M 9100x. Wow, what an improvment! It took a few days to get the head gear adjusted just right but other than that it's been a great investment. Well worth the price!

Dont worry, This is the right choice
I was looking for a new auto-darkening helmet with grind mode after years of burning with the fixed shade then switching to the full face grind shield for grinding. Looked at the top miller models along with the 9100X. Some speedglas bias was part of my decision making process when selecting this helmet. Obviously helmet selection is 100% operator comfort based and each helmet should be tested for fit/functionality. Unfortunately, the internet lacks the tangibility of in-store purchases and you need to base you decision off reviews like this one. This is an excellent helmet. From the second you pick it up you can feel quality craftsmanship throughout the helmet system. Buy it! you will not have buyers remorse. The hobby/light industrial welder will have this helmet for a life time, The professional will have a top quality helmet that will hold up to extreme work conditions for many years. I must say, an external grind mode button would make this product an undisputed 5 star product, although I could see issues with spatter/hot slag nesting on the button somehow...Please see pros/cons for bulleted comments.
Pros-Overall low profile, everything is more form fitting than the previous Speedglas models -Side view lenses are nice. I was apprehensive at first anticipating glare from the sun or other light source above work area. We'll see how it works with other welders in the area burning on the sides. -New head gear is awesome...takes some getting used to but the improved ergonomics are immediately evident. -All major parts are easily removed and replaced with parts list included
Cons-Grind mode must be turned on from inside the helmet holding the shade button down for 2 seconds... Grind mode must be turned off before arc start.. Not really a big deal...

    A good tool
I bought an early version of the Speedglas helmet many years ago, (15 or 20). It has never died. It still works well, but I can't seem to get harness parts or protective lenses for it. I indulged myself with a new, top line version, and so far I'm very pleased. I like that the #3 and #5 shade can be locked on, something I always wished for in the old version, the sensitivity controls are more intuitive and easier to adjust, there is adequate space to wear a respirator to fit under the helmet, (a custom I wish I had adopted much early), and the harness design is really good. The harness adjustable to a degree that is a little confusing, but once I played with it a bit I find the helmet to be really stable and comfortable and it stays where I need it when I'm moving my head into awkward positions. I have a very large head and it had plenty of adjustment. The best helmet suspension I've experienced. I hope it is sturdy, it looks a little light. The helmet is heavier than a conventional helmet, but not a lot, and, if you're trying to get a lot of work done, and done well, the extra weight of the auto-darkening device is absolutely worth it.

Comfortable and great on the eyes, grind mode could be easier...
I am a pipefitter/welder and weld about 7 hours a day. The hood works great as for most of the functions. Headgear is extremely comfortable. Viewing area is the perfect size. Presently I am welding in a pipe fabrication shop; mig, stick, tig. The reason for the 3 stars is grind mode. Our welds get a visual inspection before they go out the door. All tacks must be removed or ramped to look like a seamless weld. The grind mode is a royal pain. You have to cycle through every level of sensitivity to get to grind mode, then cycle through again to get back to your weld setting. A button just for grind mode on/off like Miller would make this hood perfect.
ConsNeed a button for grind mode on/off.

    Works great, fits great.
This is my first high end auto dark welding helmet. Was worth the money. Have miged with a fixed shade and tiged with an inexpensive auto. I do a lot of thin low amperage tig the sensitivity and shades available works well.
Best feature, aside from the quality of the helmet overall, for me is the peripheral vision made possible with the side windows. Helps maneuvering around in car welding roll cages, can leave the helmet on.
ProsEasily adjustable sensitivity and shade darkness. Highest sensitivity levels work well with low amperage tig. Peripheral vision with helmet on. Lot of adjustability for fitment on head.
ConsThe stop adjustment for the position of the helmet when down is only on the right side. Feels like the left side twists as there is no stop. Would like to see this on both sides.

    Excellent Helmet
After hours of researching helmets, I decided on the 9100X and it has proven to be an excellent decision. I've only used it a couple of times, but the quality and consistency of my welds has improved 100%. Optics are top notch and the fit is great. I'm still working on getting the knob tight enough to maintain the helmet in the home position, but other than that I have zero complaints. Cyberweld has excellent prices and shipping was relatively quick.

    Outstanding Helmet
This is a well designed helmet, very well thought out.The optics are superb, a clear and balanced wide view for sure. Adjustments for head fit are numerous and sensible, I have no problem getting the helmet to stay where I want it to. The side windows, front vents and wider rear opening makes cheaper helmets seem claustrophobic and suffocating.
After using a $50 auto-dark helmets for TIG welding nothing compares to this.

    Great Helmet
Just started to weld and did a lot of research and spoke with a few folks all recommended to purchase a good helmet to protect your eyes. Like the large view and the sides have a tinted panel which gives you a very clear view not the tunnel vision or feeling from the other helmets. The cost was a big question mark but after I tried the helmet , I can tell you the extra $$ are worth it!!

    Fantastic Helmet ! ! !
Wow, this hood makes such a difference in comfort level and the optics clarity is terrific! The first time I put it on I was amazed by the side windows, you can see everything, you are not in a dark dungeon. The comfort level goes way beyond any other hood I've worn, although it will take a while to fine tune the head gear adjustments. The optics are clear, not murky, which is a great thing for 40+yr old eyes. Great Helmet
I have been using this helmet (9100X) for 3 weeks straight now. Realistically about 12-18 hours a week doing GMAW & GTAW. Also light cutting, grinding, and torch work. The ability to choose such a wide range of shades, delays, and sensitivity settings for all of those different processes was very important for me, and this helmet has them. It also gives me confidence that it will last. It seems durable. Plus I dig the side windows. Helps me to see the boss out of my peripherals, Lol!

This is my first auto darkening helmet after 30receiving years of welding on a weekly basis. Through research the 9100 appeared to be the best choice for me. speedglas 9100x tig welder
the speedglas lens is way better than the lenses found in the other auto darkening hoods in terms of clarity and the evenness of the shade across the lens. i have also found that the sensors work vary well and have plenty of adjustment and sensitivity. the only thing i don't care too much for on this hood is its a little heavier than the old speedglas 9000 series so if you are looking for lightweight hood i would go that route but the 9000 offers less coverage of the neck so i used to get a little flash burn on the sides of my neck if i was welding in awkward positions . the headgear of the 9100x is very adjustable and pretty comfortable once you get used to it. i think they had to design this new double head strap headgear to make up for the extra hood weight and it works well at distributing the weight better across your head but to me it still feels a little front heavy in comparison to other hoods. over all i think its the best choice out right now for a good all around welding hood for TIG,MIG or stick. i use it for TIG work off a table.

Prosquality, adjustability of the headgear and electronics, coverage of the hood, side windows, durability

    Excellent Quality!
After receiving and using my new Speedglas 9100X, I am happy to report that it has exceeded all of my expectations. I did a lot of research and comparisons prior to purchasing so I felt pretty comfortable in knowing I made the right choice, however, I was still a little skeptical if it would be as good as everyone else had said. No disappointments with this helmet! The quality of every component is outstanding. The headgear is simply amazing in its comfort and the optical quality really puts my old auto darkening helmet to shame. It was nice to get extra inside and outside lenses included as well. I also purchased the extended head protection cover that attaches to the helmet and have already noticed the complete lack of sparks going down my neck and in my ears. You can buy cheaper helmets, but some things shouldn't be skimped on... like your vision.
I believe there are a few companies out there that stand out above all others when it comes to high quality in their entire product line, and 3M is unquestionably one of them. I have never bought a 3M product that I wasn't happy with, and this helmet is no exception. Highly recommended!
