Harris® NIC-L-WELD 99 Welding Electrode NLW99500POP

19 Stick Tube - Harris® NIC-L-WELD 99 stick welding electrode is an AWS classification ENi-CI high nickel welding alloy. NIC-L-WELD 99 is excellent for the repair and maintenance of all types of cast iron. It may be used for building up, joining, filling holes, breaks and cracks. NIC-L-WELD 99 runs out-of-position very well and features good color match and machine-ability. It operates on both AC and DC welding current, straight and reverse polarity.

NOTE: 3/32" diameter has 19 electrodes per tube. 1/8" diameter has 11 electrodes per tube.

Features:
  • Conforms to AWS A5.15, ENiCI
  • Close color match
  • Excellent machine-ability
  • Available in 3/32 inch and 1/8 inch diameters

    Procedure:
Use AC or DC reverse or straight polarity. Clean the weld area
Bevel breaks and cracks deep enough so the first pass ties in the bottom of the crack
In most cases, preheating is not necessary, but heavy sections should be preheated to approximately 400F
Use a short arc. Stringer beads are recommended
Skip or back-step weld and peen to relieve stresses.
Allow the casting to cool slowly

Harris 99L nickel rod results - I like this product !

Never having welded cast iron previously, i bought a selection of electrodes from my local welding supplier (Shasta Welding Supply) in Redding, Ca. in summer 2019.

My end goal was to modify an early Willys bellhousing to accept a Ford pickup transmission.

For practice, i used a Willys bellhousing which had been dropped and badly cracked.

Each electrode i used prior to the Harris 99 cracked after 10 minutes cool down in open air.

The last electrode i used was Harris 99 on low amp settings 70, i think, and maybe up to 130 amps. Anyway, I experienced No Cracking with the Harris 99 !!!

All areas to be welded were V-grooved near to the base of the crack. Welds were made in short passes like stitch welding, and peening with the pointed end of my slag hammer to relieve stresses immediately after laying the bead.

Note: At the low amperage i was welding with, i had no arc length, so the electrode was almost in the puddle, which looked like molen solder when flowing. Very Nice Product.

The practice bellhousing i learned on has not cracked yet with the Harris 99 repair.

Oh, also i used the 3/32" diameter electrodes, and cut them in half for holding like a pencil while applying the electrode for good stability and control.
